Abraham Clark was a prominent figure in New Jersey politics before the American Revolution. He was known as "the poor man's counselor" for his commitment to representing those who could not afford legal representation. His background as a surveyor and self-taught lawyer, combined with his service in various public offices, including high sheriff of Essex County, established him as a respected leader in his community 

Support for Independence

Initially, the New Jersey delegation to the Continental Congress was opposed to independence from Great Britain. However, as tensions escalated, the state convention replaced the delegates with those favoring separation. Clark was appointed as a delegate due to his strong pro-independence stance and his ability to articulate the need for the colonies to break away from British rule. He was known for his passionate arguments in favor of independence, which resonated with the changing sentiments of the time 

Selection as Delegate

On June 21, 1776, Clark was appointed as a delegate to the Continental Congress, alongside other like-minded representatives. His arrival in Philadelphia on June 28, 1776, marked a significant moment as he joined his fellow delegates in voting for the Declaration of Independence. Clark's commitment to the cause was evident when he stated, "It is gone so far, that we must now be a free independent State, or a conquered country" 

Personal Sacrifices

Clark's dedication to the Patriot cause was further demonstrated by the personal sacrifices he made during the war. His two sons were captured by the British and imprisoned, yet he remained steadfast in his commitment to independence, refusing to recant his signing of the Declaration even when pressured by the British
